Sail Sydney - Day 2 postponed after morning racing

by Stacey French - Australian Sailing on 16 Dec 2016
Jake Lilley leads the Finn fleet heading into their final day at Sail Sydney Robin Evans
Rain welcomed competitors this morning with light racing conditions which resulted in Principal Race Officer, Colin Chidgey postponing day two of Sail Sydney.

“Weather was not kind to us today with consistent rain and the breeze dying off to next to nothing at 1:30PM,” Colin said.

“The call was made because the forecast isn’t promising and sending sailors out to wait around isn’t our or their idea of a good time sailing. I’m pretty sure most competitors were relieved that racing was cancelled given the conditions.”

49er, 49er FX, 29er, Laser Standard and Finn sailors departed Woollahra Sailing Club and did their best to get in as many races as possible. In the 49ers, Australian Sailing Team Crew, David Gilmour and Joel Turner sailed consistently to retain the lead heading into the final day.

“Conditions were okay today,” David said. “We had really light winds and a lot of new teams here and the light winds makes them all really competitive so it was quiet close racing.

“It’s the second regatta that Joel and I have sailed together so we are trying to do a lot of racing over Summer to get used to sailing with each other.

“Hopefully we get some more racing in tomorrow, we just want to get as many races as we can in this week, the weather hasn’t cooperated but hopefully tomorrow we can remain consistent and race well.”

The 49er FX fleet got two races in with Caitlin Elks and Hayley Clark winning both races to lead the fleet overall.

After squeezing in one race today, the boys from NSW, Tom Crockett and Max Paul are in control of the 29er fleet with one day of competition remaining.

Rio Olympian, Jake Lilley picked up where he left off yesterday to maintain a commanding lead heading into the final day of racing tomorrow.

“It was really light out there today and raining cats and dogs,” Jake said. “We managed to get three races in which was really good and I was pleased with how I sailed.

“The forecast for tomorrow isn’t brilliant but if we all ask the weather Gods to be kind to us tonight we might have a shot at some good racing tomorrow on the Harbour.”

Charlie Buckingham from the United States leads the Laser Standard fleet posting a second, a fourth and a fifth in today’s racing. 2015 defending Sail Sydney Laser Champion, Giovanni Coccoluto had a much better second day winning two of the three races to be sitting second overall.

Day three of Sail Sydney will start tomorrow at 10AM with the 420s, 470 Men and Women, Laser Radial competing in their final day while the Flying 11s and Optimist Intermediate and Open fleets start their regatta campaigns.

29ers, 49er, 49er FX, Finn and Laser Standard final racing will begin at 2pm.

Green Fleet sailing starts tomorrow from 11AM with the Sabot’s, Pacer’s and Tasers at 2PM. Moth sailing will begin at 4:30PM.

Sail Sydney is proudly supported by the NSW Government through Transport for NSW, Nautilus Marine Boat Insurance, Gill Marine Technical Clothing, Steve Jarvin Motors, Tohatsu Outboards, Lejen Marine and Sydney Harbour Boat Storage.

Drummoyne Yacht Club and Vaucluse Yacht Club are proud partners of Sail Sydney 2016.
