Countdown on for Global Challenge
by Jo Skinner on 2 Oct 2004
At the best of times it’s hard for us all to keep in control of what’s going on in our hectic and unpredictable lives, so why then do 216 ‘normal’ people choose to race for ten months, in the most erratic and dangerous sailing conditions?
The answer lies in the Global Challenge 2004/5. Starting on October 3, from Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, these thrill seeking amateur racing teams will race the wrong way round the world (weather-wise), for fun.
All 12 racing teams have spent the last week preparing not only the yacht for the adventure and challenge before them, but also themselves.
Each skipper, the only professional sailor onboard each yacht, has been putting their crew through vigorous training programmes; polishing their skills, checking all sailing procedures and packing the special rationed food packages - and of course they have also enjoyed the odd party!
On Wednesday, over 1200 children from local schools filled every nook and cranny of the yachts, asking relentless questions and putting the crews through their paces.
It’s the first time Gunwharf Quays has hosted the Global Challenge and there has certainly been a marked increase in the numbers passing through the complex. The interest in the race and the yachts has been phenomenal, with estimated visitor figures hitting over a quarter of a million.
With all the hustle, bustle and commotion, it’s hard to understand how each crew member even has time to think about what lies ahead of them, let alone get nervous.
As the start day looms, and with less than two days to go, rest assured that for the majority of the crew, the 14.00 hour start on Sunday is figuring largely in their minds.
