Images from two Sail-World.com Editors have made the Top 20 in the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image for 2016

Almost 150 photographers entered the competition. The entries were reduced to 80 images for the second phase of the competition and were selected by a panel of well known international yacht racing photographers - Christian Février, Rick Tomlinson and Erik Brin, which have been published on the official website, allowing the international Jury and the public to vote.

The winner will be announced and celebrated during the Yacht Racing Forum in Malta on November 29.

Top twenty photographers (in alphabetical order):

Eugenia Bakunova (RUS)
Christian Beeck (GER)
Matias Capizzano (ITA)
Rachel Fallon-Langdon (UK)
Luis Fernandez (SPA)
Richard Gladwell (NZL)
Alex Irwin (UK)
Pierrick Jeannoutot (FRA)
Jean-Marie Liot (FRA)
Mark Lloyd (UK)
Gilles Martin-Raget (FRA)
Nico Martinez (SPA)
Pedro Martinez (SPA)
Claire Matches (UK)
Mauro Melandri (ITA)
Guy Nowell (UK)
Benoit Stichelbaut (FRA)
Tim Thomas (UK)
James Tomlinson (UK)
Jasper Van-Staveren (NED)

The leading countries are: United Kingdom (7 pictures), France (4 pictures), Spain (3 pictures), Italy (2 pictures), New Zealand, Russia, The Netherlands and Germany (1 picture).

The votes by the public on Internet are still open, and not restricted to the top 20 images selected by the Jury.

Sail-World Asia's Editor Guy Nowell's entry shows Sam Chan’s TP52 just kept moving below the Dragon’s Back at Shek O in the 2016 Rolex China Sea race, making a slow exit from Hong Kong in marginal breeze. The interesting cloud formation merging with the coastal landscape made up for the frustration.

Sail-World New Zealand's Editor Richard Gladwell's entry came from the other end of the weather spectrum on Day 4 of the 2016 Olympic Regatta as the leading three boats in the Mens 470 race sailed in survival conditions on the final dog-leg to the finish line in 3-4 metre Atlantic swells and 20-25kt winds. The day was reckoned by veteran photographers to have been the most extreme conditions experienced at an Olympic Regatta, says Gladwell.

A frequent contributor to Sail-World.com, Eugenia Bakunova from Russia also made the Final 20 images for 2016 with her shot of Land Rover BAR during the Extreme Sailing Series in St Petersburg.

The ‘Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image’ is a yearly photographic contest and exhibition. It seeks to recognise the very best yacht racing image taken during the year, and that which best represents the essence and excitement of yacht racing as a sport.

The contest is open to professional yacht racing photographers from all over the world.

Three prizes are awarded:

The 'Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image' (main prize), awarded by a panel of international specialists from the yacht racing and photographic industries.

The 'Yacht Racing Forum Award', decided by the 700 delegates of World Sailing’s Annual conference as well as by the 300 delegates of the Yacht Racing Forum.

The 'Public Prize', selected by the number of popular votes on Internet.

The partnership between World Sailing and the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image provides great visibility to the world’s best photographers, and showcase their work to their current and potential future clients.

The delegates from World Sailing’s annual conference will be asked to vote for their favorite picture. Their votes will be added to the voices from the delegates of the Yacht Racing Forum (Malta, November 28-29), and will contribute to the election of the winner of the Yacht Racing Forum award.
