Bo Petersen stays at the top of the OK Dinghy World Ranking list

by Robert Deaves on 27 Oct 2016
Bo Petersen remains OK Dinghy World No. 1 after action packed European season Gerard Touren
Current European Champion Bo Petersen (DEN) not only stays at the top of the October 2017 release of the OK Dinghy World Ranking list, but has also amassed the highest points score of any sailor in the 11 years the list has been running.

In addition both Petersen and second placed Thomas Hansson-Mild (SWE) join a select group of sailors who have collected more than 1000 points.

This perhaps reflects the health of the class as much as Petersen’s own performance, as ranking points are based on numbers of sailors attending and numbers of highly ranked sailors at each regatta. More sailors equal more points.

This release includes the highly successful World Championship in Quiberon and a large number of well-supported national regattas held since. Former World Champion Hansson-Mild moves up one place to second after winning both the Danish and Swedish titles. Former World No. 1, Greg Wilcox (NZL) drops to third with only one podium position to add to his points score.

While World’s bronze medalist Charlie Cumbley (GBR) moves up to fourth after retaining his British title, World Champion, Jim Hunt (GBR) moves from 25th to 12th. Stefan Myralf (DEN) drops one place to fifth, with Richard Burton (GBR) rounding out the top six, moving to his highest position ever after wining the Belgian title in September.

This release also includes results from the Dutch nationals, won by Dirk Dame (GER), the Polish Nationals, won by Dawid Kania (POL), the French Nationals, won by Phillipe Chelle (FRA) and the German Nationals, won by Andre Budzien (GER).

There are around 50 new sailors included in this release bringing the total number of sailors to have competed in at least one ranking event to a record 495. This year has also seen significant growth in the Dutch fleet with several events pulling in boats from across northern Europe.

While the down-under season is getting underway, the real interest for the coming season is just seven months away, with the 2017 World Championship in Barbados, in May, followed by the European Championship in Faarborg, Denmark, in August. Another action packed season beckons.
