World Masters Games - Over 35? World Masters Games Sailing is for You

by Nick Page on 25 Oct 2016
The Laser and Weta will be sailed at the World Masters Games at Torbay in April 2017 Phil Benge
Forget the Olympics, forget the social golf game, forget the lump of lead under the boat.

This season offers you the best opportunity you will probably ever have to shake out the cobwebs and do what you always meant to do when you were young - compete in a world dinghy championship. Prove to yourself that you could always have done it. You just needed the opportunity, and here it is. Choose a Laser or choose a Weta and get into it.

World Masters Games sailing at Torbay from 22nd to 28th April next year offers you the opportunity to sail in a world class dinghy event in your own back yard and be part of what will be the biggest world sporting event of 2017. The World Masters Games will feature a spectacular opening ceremony at Eden Park and a full social program, which are included in your event entry fee and will give you the opportunity to mix with 25,000 other masters athletes.

With the whole season from now until April ahead of us there is plenty of time for you to get a boat, get sailing and enjoy the physical and mental challenges of competing against like-minded Masters sailors from around the world.

So just for this season calm the Zephyr, cage the Tiger, sadden the Jolly, KO the OK. Haul a boat back from the beach, steal it off the kids, pick one up on Trade Me or go and see Roger at Weta Marine or Dan at Watershed for a flash new one and get on the water and join the rest of us for the summer.

Remember the guys you were always going to beat years ago; Peter Lester, Murray Thom, Marko Orams, Steve Pyatt, Mark Oliver, Scott Leith, Dan Slater, Laura Baldwin, Michelle Bain (nee Baker) and many other; they will be there so have a go at them again. While you’re at it why don’t you grab some mates and put together a program for the summer and convince your mates overseas to come for a holiday and give it a go? Why not start with the Laser Freshwater Champs at Pupuke on 13th November or the Sir Peter Blake Regatta at Torbay, on the third and 4th December or join the regular Weta fleet at Torbay on Sundays.

But remember it's all about being there. Unrestricted entry gives you a once in a lifetime opportunity to sail in an event like this in our own back yard and join in a great social program to back up the racing on the water.

So whether your 35 or 75 get a boat, start the program and join well over 100 sailors already registered and enter now.

For all the details and registration is at click here or Facebook Torbay Sailing Club – WMG 2017 sailing.
