The most valuable trophy at the 2016 Resolute Cup won't go to the overall winner. The Corinthian Spirit Award presented by Porsche Cars North America will go to the sailor who, in the eyes of his or her fellow competitors, has best represented the ideals of Corinthian competition, including sportsmanship, keen sense of competition, courteous interaction and engagement with their competitors and regatta officials, and overall approach to the sport and traditions of sailing. The deserving sailor will take home an $8,000 Porsche Bike RS.

'The Resolute Cup, and the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup to which its linked, are Corinthian events, and it's essential that we celebrate the true spirit of amateur sport,' said Patricia O'Donnell, the event chairperson. 'We're incredibly grateful that Porsche Cars North America has stepped in to sponsor this award and recognize the importance of competing fairly and with integrity.'

Racing for the 2016 Resolute Cup, a Corinthian Championship for U.S. Yacht Clubs, starts on Wednesday, September 14, and runs through Saturday, September 17. Teams representing 28 yacht clubs from around the country have gathered at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., this week to compete for bragging rights and an invitation to the 2017 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, the premiere international big-boat, one-design regatta for amateur sailors. The 2016 Resolute Cup is sponsored by Porsche, Helly Hansen and Melges Performance Sailboats.

'Porsche Cars North America is very proud to sponsor the Corinthian Spirit Award for the 2016 Resolute Cup and to present the winner with a Porsche Bike RS,' said Jacob Harb, Area East Vice President of Porsche Cars North America. 'This cutting-edge bicycle is a result of the same love of performance engineering and dedication to detail that goes into each one of our cars. Competition is part of Porsche’s DNA, as is integrity. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our association with this event than by awarding this prize to the sailor that best exemplifies the spirit of Corinthian competition.'

Italian Trade Commission Brings a Taste of Italy to Newport

The Resolute Cup features a robust social schedule, which is one of the hallmarks of the event. The evening gatherings allow for sailors who have battled all day on the water to relive the excitement of the racing while forming new bonds and reviving old friendships.

On Wednesday evening, all Resolute Cup competitors, officials and volunteers will enjoy a reception presented in collaboration with the Italian-Trade Commission. The reception will celebrate Made in Italy and toast the occasion in Italian Style featuring Italian food, cocktails and wine culture.

'Sailing is a very social sport,' said O'Donnell. 'A good regatta is as much about the quality of the on-shore events as it is the racing. We couldn't be more pleased to partner with the Italian Trade Commission and bring some of Italy's gastronomic delights to our regatta.'
