Cruisin’ at Hamilton Island

A record 91 boats, almost half the boats in the entire regatta, were sailing in Cruising division at Hahn Premium Race Week at Hamilton Island.

Big boats like the Oyster 68 In the Mood, the Dashew 62 Moonshadow from San Mateo, California, down to the Morgan 780 Marissa, and the Sonata 8 Nessie.

Going into the last race in the series, the leading group included Nick Bruijn’s O.D and Max Prentice’s CCC Apples.

Max Prentice, corporate Salvationist from PPB had previously sailed his Jarkan 12.5 She’s Apples Two at Hamilton Island but this year decide chartering was easier.

The chartered Bavaria 47, became CCCC Apples for this event and its sail wardrobe received a boost with spinnakers and headsails from his Jarkan.

With all his regular Sydney crew including Max’s wife Valerie, there was one local addition, Peter Haliday from Airlie Beach, who provided the local tour guide input.

Peter commented ‘We did not really think we had a chance in this big division, but we had a first up win and looked like heroes, we enjoyed that a lot, so every day we tried harder and harder. The beer in the ice chest mid-cockpit was hardly being touched by the end of the regatta.’

Amazingly there was a start line incident between series leader Nick Bruijn’s Farr 1020 O.D. and second placed CCCC’s Apples and with O.D. losing in the protest room, Prentice and his crew won the series.

Second in the class was John Collett’s Radford 11.4 Serein and third was Roger Hart’s Grizzly Adams, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his Hamilton Island Race Week win in 1994.

Max Prentice nursing a serious headache this morning, summed up the benefits of the Cruising division, We’ve raced PHS with windward leeward up here before, but the Cruising division races are just so pleasurable. They are really idyllic, wonderful scenery and every day we saw whales, turtles and porpoises, it’s a great way to have a relaxing holiday’
