50th Governor's Cup International Junior Match Racing continues

by Nancy Mellon on 21 Jul 2016
BYC Team - 50th Governor's Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship Mary Longpre
Racing resumed on another beautiful day in Southern California. The twelve teams were towed out to the race course by the Race Committee boat with PRO (Principal Race Officer) Don Becker and his support team aboard.

The winds were light when racing started at noon. However when it was time for the second Round Robin to begin around 3pm, the winds increased to around eleven knots. The temperature was in the high 80’s for most of the day.

The day began with San Diego Yacht Club’s Nevin Snow the only undefeated skipper. However in Flight 10, Sam Gilmour of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, the 2013 Gov Cup winner, was able to defeat Nevin, the 2011 winner.

Last year’s winner, Harry Price of Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, was victorious over Nevin’s team in Flight nine. Harry’s team is now the only team with just one loss. George Anyon of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron defeated Harry in flight five on Tuesday.

A special aspect of Match Racing is the presence of experienced Umpires on the water, closely observing each match from small motor boats. Two umpires follow each match, making instant decisions about any rule infraction. Penalties are imposed that must be cleared before the end of the race. Umpires review their decisions with the racers at a ‘debrief’ when the fleet returns to the dock.

This year, ISAF and US Sailing umpires will come from Massachusetts, New York, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, and throughout California. Racing will continue on Thursday with the remainder of the second Round Robin.

The second round robin began after the first was completed, giving every team a chance to race every other team. Two flights were raced with Harry Price, Lachy Gilmore, and Nevin Snow each winning both of their races. The Spectator fleet as well as interested observers can watch from the beautiful waters or beach in Newport Beach. Competition will conclude on Saturday with the Finals between the top two teams.

After the first Round Robin (eleven races), the results are shown below.
