François Gabart breaks 24-hour singlehanded North Atlantic record!

François Gabart breaks the 24-hour singlehanded distance record! Jean-Marie Liot / DPPI / Macif
Having covered 778 miles* (1,441km) at an average speed of 32.4 knots, François Gabart has this Sunday taken the crown for the greatest distance covered singlehanded in 24 hours! In so doing, he beats the 718.5-mile record secured on 8 June 2016 by Thomas Coville aboard Sodebo’Ultim.

After setting sail from New York on Saturday 2 July, at 00h 18mn 45sec (GMT), to tackle the singlehanded North Atlantic record, the skipper of the trimaran MACIF has been confronting sustained WSW’ly winds of 30 knots since yesterday, which have enabled him to rack up the miles required to snatch this first record.

The wind conditions are set to remain stable throughout the day, so he may well be in a position to improve on this record between now and this evening.

Taking on this kind of challenge on a multihull is a first for the skipper of the trimaran MACIF.

He also holds the 24-hour singlehanded distance record on a monohull (545.34 miles covered aboard the 60-foot monohull MACIF during the Vendée Globe, on 09/12/2012).
