Welsh Youth and Junior Championship - Callum's clean sweep takes prize

by RYA on 10 May 2016 2016 Welsh Youth and Junior Championships - North Wales sailor Callum Davidson Guild was the star of the show, winning all his races at the Welsh Youth and Junior Championships held in Pwllheli.

With a healthy windsurfing competition making a debut at the Welsh Youth and Juniors, there were more than 120 competitors taking advantage of good racing conditions off the North West Wales coast.

“We were lucky with the weather, there were some really good quality performances and people left with a smile on their faces,” explained RYA Cymru Wales high performance manager Paul Simes.

“Callum Davidson Guild won every race in the Optimist Fleet winning the Optimist Plate. It is worth a special mention for Maddie Leary who was the best female sailor winning the Rose Bowl, first girl and fourth overall.

“We had a big field for the topper boats, which was good to see, and it was a good day for Welsh squad sailors, those taking part from across the border and those less experienced sailors who also took part in challenging conditions with a northerly wind.”

Davidson Guild not only had a perfect record of wins in all six races, but even discarded a race win. Drew Gibbons of West Kirby was second, Sam Kneale of Cardiff Bay third, Leary in fourth.

The Topper fleet was won by Samuel Cooper of West Lancashire, with four race wins, while Harry Pulford of Llyn Brenig was second and first Welsh Sailor winning the Topper Plate, Finn Robarts of Fishguard Bay in third.

The Topper 4.2 was won by Thomas Willett of Llangorse with five race wins, Zoe Chase from Mumbles was second and Cardiff Bay's Jessica Roberts in third.

The 29er fleet was won by Tom Bale and Harvey Martin of South Caernarfonshire winning the 29er Trophy. Second was Sarah Jarman and Nick Devereux of Royal Lymington and Budworth, with Abigail Roberts and Jess Sillitoe-Price of Clywedog in third.

In the General handicap fleet, Ciaron Jones and Elliott Jones of Y Felinheli Port Dinorwic were in a three way tie on points with Iago Davies of Pwlllheli and Tom Renny of Teifi/ Fishguard Bay. Jones and Jones finished top by virtue of recording most wins and collected the General Handicap Plate.

Renny won the Laser event and the Welsh Water Cup, with Davies second, this time there was a point between them with Anja Haji-Michael from Redesmere SC in third.

The Feva event was won by Lorelei Bates and Felicity Allen of Bowmoor and Cardiff Bay, winning five out of six races. Ewan Luke and Zac Blomeley of Llandudno were second.

In the Windsurf fleet the overall 7.8 win was taken by Jake Wolgram of Colwyn Bay Barbarians, Megan Boorman of Dale SC in second, Brandon Pugh of Tata Steel in third. Windsurf 6.8 was won by Elis Glyn Jones of Menai Dragons, beating Jack Jones of Colwyn Bay Barbarians thanks to wins, three to two, after they finished level on points. This was the most tightly contested of the windsurfing categories. In the Windsurf 5.8 Catrin Williams of Menai Dragons beat Lucy Evans of Tata Steel by a point. In the Windsurf 4.5. Neil Pethig Llandudno won all six rounds.

In the OnBoard Optimists category, Freddie Spillane of Llandudno came first ahead of Lucy Roberts of Pwllheli and Peter Martin of Cardiff Bay.
