Multihulls to the fore

'The multihull fleet looks to be going from strength-to-strength and we may be looking at a record fleet this year,' said Mr. Byron Jones, Managing Director of organisers Media Business Services Co., Ltd. (MBS).

Phuket Raceweek has seen steady growth and interest in the multihull classes over recent years and this year with three multihull classes planned, the fleet looks to be both large and competitive.

In Multihull Racing the Stealth catamarans from the Asia Catamarans yard will be out in full force including regular racers Java and Hurricane, and a new one soon-to-be-launched is expected to join the line-up. Add to that IMAGE Asia Nina, Thor, the chartered DaVinci and more, and the two 40+ foot trimarans Adrenalin and former Route de Rhum winner Tantrum 2, and Multihull Racing looks set to be a very strong class.

The Corsair Pulse 600's, now numbering five, are looking for a one-design class and some close racing while the Firefly 850's will add a new build to their numbers, in addition to a number of chartered entries, and en masse they will be out looking to break the speed record if the breeze is up.

Platus are back

As part of a drive to get one-design Platu racing going in Phuket again, a small group of sailors from both Phuket and Pattaya have launched a three event one-design race series in Phuket which kicks-off with Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek.

Working close with Phuket Raceweek to establish the launch event, all Platus will be identical and race with sails provided by the series organisers. Four crews have already confirmed and there are Platus available for charter for those looking for exciting one-design monohull racing.
