Trofeo Princesa Sofia - Its not over 'til the Fat Lady sings

by Rob Kothe YachtsandYachting.com & Sail-World.com on 1 Apr 2016
giles scott SW
A reminder that nothing is certain, certainly not a Rio Gold medal, came in spectacular fashion today, when the Red Hot Rio Finn class favourite Britain's Giles Scott broke his rudder ahead of race 10 of the 47th Princesa Sofia regatta in Palma,Mallorca today.

As a result discarding his DNC, his melt down 45th from race three in the series was suddenly added to his score plummeting Scott from the regatta lead down to fourth place.

23 year old Kiwi Josh Junior now leads the series from Tapio Nirkko from Finland and the youngest sailor in the Finn fleet, Australia's Jake Lilley.

While this is frustrating for Scott, as the picture shows. its a heartening reminder to never give up for sailors battling toward Rio against the dominating Matt Belcher and Will Ryan in the 470 Mens class and Pete Burling and Blair Tuke in the 49er class.

We talked to the three times Finn class world champion earlier in the regatta and he emphasised that there was no room for complacency from his long sequence of regatta wins.

Ain't that the truth.

More news from a rainy Bay of Palma soon.
