The inaugural Super 11 Victorian Championships will held at Royal Brighton Yacht Club on April 23 and 24.
There is a tremendous energy around the new breed of fast high performance yachts growing in number around Port Phillip. The Super 11 category includes a range of these – The McConaghy 31, Melges 32, J111, Flying Tiger 10 and Thompson 920 among others, so altogether a very exciting racing group.
RBYC is home to a number of Super 11 boats, including Tony Cuschieri’s new AC33 Martini Racing, and the club is encouraging the development of the class.
“Brighton sees the Super 11s firstly as an exciting group of boats that will provide some excellent racing on the Bay. Secondly, it includes a range of more affordable options that provide an easier entry point for new owners to get into high performance keelboat sailing”, said RBYC Club Captain James Heywood.
“We are delighted to be able to host the first Super 11 Victorian Championships”, he said.
The regatta will include a 20 mile passage race around fixed marks at the top of the bay on day one, followed by a series of three windward leeward races on day two.
Super 11 Sailing Association’s Tony Cuschieri is hoping to see ten or more local boats and hopefully one or two from interstate competing in the Inaugural Victorian Championships.
“We are a new Association. It’s just great to be getting this event off the ground after we had such fantastic racing in Geelong in January. Now we just hope for the right conditions to deliver some of that thrilling Super 11 speed”, said Mr Cuschieri.
The Notice of Race is now available on the RBYC website.
