Horrible pirates and free family boat festival these holidays at NMM

These school holidays families are invited to spend the day have a swashbuckling adventure at the Australian National Maritime Museum as horrible pirates take over the museum. Visitors can find out what it takes to be a pirate in Horrible Histories: Pirates the exhibition, participate in lively and interactive science show and enjoy hands-on workshops, themed creative activities, performances and more.

Also during the school holidays the museum presents a free three-day family festival – The Classic and Wooden Boat Festival – celebrating Australia’s rich maritime history.

Exhibition: Horrible Histories: Pirates - the exhibition

Throughout the holidays

The Australian National Maritime Museum presents Australia’s first interactive, hands-on exhibition based on the bestselling Horrible Histories books.

Produced in association with Scholastic Children’s Books, the exhibition brings author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown’s unique approach to history to life with foul facts, lively illustrations and gruesome games.

Families are challenged to discover if they have what it takes to be a really horrible pirate. They can take command of a pirate ship, design their own pirate flag and try out different weapons. They’ll find their fate on the wheel of misfortune, discover the best loot to steal and take a pirate selfie.

Included in the special Pirates ticket: Adult $20, Child/con $12, Members Free.

Kids’ craft activities: Scurvy Swashbucklers Science (Five - Twelve years)

10 –14 and 18 - 24 April, 10am – 4pm

Delve into the history of pirates in an adventure with science! Create your own terrific tall ship, experiment with flintlock shot marble paintings, making a kaleido-telescope or other piratical accessory. Enjoy dress ups and interactive games.

Included in the special Pirates ticket – Adult $20, Child/con $12, Members Free.

Cabinet of curiosities Pernicious pirates and their wicked weapons (All ages)

10 – 24 April, 11am – 12pm and 2pm – 3pm daily

Get up close and personal with curious and terrible weapons, dress, and navigational tools related to the golden age of piracy in this hands on touch trolley.

Included in the special Pirates ticket – Adult $20, Child/con $12, Members Free.



Performances: Sci-Pi-Pirates in an adventure with science (Four - Twelve years and adults)

10 – 14, 16 - 22 and 24 April, 11.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm

Join in a lively and interactive presentation that investigates the science of pirate life – the physics of canon shot, ships lines and wind power, the buoyancy of a pirate galleon or the gruesome biology of sailors’ diseases. It’s an adventure into the scurvy world of sci-pi!

Free festival: 2016 Classic and Wooden Boat Festival (all ages)

15 - 17 April, 10.00am - 10.00pm Friday and Saturday, 10.00am – 5.00pm Sunday

The Australian National Maritime Museum presents a lively free festival celebrating Australia’s rich maritime history. With over 150 beautiful wooden boats, maritime demonstrations, fashion shows, entertainment, market stalls, ferry rides and more.

Join us for some crafty festival fun in the Kids Boatshed for special children’s activities all weekend. Craft a model sailing vessel and race it, decorate a sailor hat or print your own calico bag, enjoy face painting, dress ups, musical story telling and interactive aqua play games inspired by all the beautiful boats on our shores this festival weekend.

Family torchlight tour: Scurvy Pirates and Wretched Remedies (4 - 12 years and adults)

Friday 22 April 2016, 6 - 7.30pm

Take a theatrical character guided treasure hunt through the museum galleries by torchlight. Explore gruesome stories and terrible true histories as you journey from Rough Medicine to the Horrible Histories Pirates exhibition and enjoy games, souvenir crafts and themed refreshments.

Claymation Workshop: Pernicious pirates (8 - 14 years)

Thursday 14 or Wednesday 20 April, 10am – 3.30pm

Discover how to produce your own stop-motion and clay animations inspired by the Horrible Histories Pirates exhibition in this fun filled one day workshop. Create your own animation to take home and have your work featured on the museum’s YouTube channel.
