2015-16 Etchells NSW State Championship – Overall report

by Kylie Wilson on 2 Mar 2016
One, Two, Three in race four, going to Landrat, with regatta winners in second, and Top 40 in third - Etchells 2015-2016 NSW State Championship Kylie Wilson http://www.positiveimage.com.au
2015-16 Etchells NSW State Championship – “We sailed beautifully for four races.”...it takes some humble blokes to not be instantly ecstatic about winning a State Championship; true gentlemen, true sportsmen.

David Gleadhill, middle man, expressed the sentiment soon after the maths was sorted. Along with skipper, Peter “Polly” McNeill, and “first time ever in his life bowman”, John Boyd, who all agreed – it would have been nice to finish on a high with a more convincing points win. What caused this hesitation... A not so great last race in tricky breeze – after a two, two, one, two and going into race six, fifteen points clear of second place – it ended up the closest of results, winning on count-back over Peter Merrington’s ‘Top 40’.

The ‘Top 40’ crew did well to come back from deep at the top mark in race six to finish fifth, which ‘Iris III’ crew were pleased to hear when coming ashore – one place for either of them making the difference.

Now four-time NSW State Champion, Peter, said “we’re super happy to win it as we’d thought we’d blown it; we haven’t won for quite a while” – which must have been a reference to NSW, as they are current QLD state champions too! This lead to suggestions from the crowd of an all-states challenge; back-up for WA this weekend, and VIC the following – how about it Polly?!

There was much discussion about the lake, the location, the various shark sightings over recent months making for very quick swimming of the hulls each morning – mainly though, the consensus was Lake Macquarie is a beautiful place to sail – plus how about those dolphins, having fun right alongside the racing! Thanks to the ‘Surprise’ boys, Matt, Ryan, and Chris, for the footage – who were reminiscing about their first ever Etchells regatta on the Lake at the 2010 Nationals.

PRO, Kevin Wilson, also enjoyed the racing on the Lake, and noted quite a few boats he’d not seen before at regattas – “it’s great to see some new names out there, and we’ve been around Etchells for a long time”. The Wilson brothers again went above and beyond to run a fabulous regatta – thank you Gentlemen!

Thank you too, to all the wonderful volunteers – we can’t do without you!
