Day Two of the inaugural Phuket Race Week

by Asian Edition on 13 Jul 2004 Day Two of the inaugural Phuket Race Week offered varying wind conditions under both sunny and overcast skies. With early afternoon winds blowing up to 12 knots racers enjoyed an around-the-islands course in the waters off the Evason Phuket Resort and Six Senses Spa and Chalong Bay in the south part of Phuket Island.

Eager to get underway, several boats in the IRC and Club classes jumped the gun and found themselves having to return to restart and catch up with their fellow racers. High spirits and the competitive edge nevertheless kept the plan intact and returned a great day of sailing.

Taking an early lead in the race and pulling away under spinnaker was the IRC boat, Yendys, owned by Ahmad Farid. On corrected time however, a third place was awarded. Viroj Nualkhair’s, Octopussy, finished first in this class and John Vause’s, Ruby Tuesday, placed second.

Sailing a great race and pulling away early from other boats in the racing class was Scott Duncanson’s, Securicor Som Tam Express. A first place went to this locally built Phuket 8 with second going to Stuart Harrison’s, Panic, and Mark Horwood’s, Image Asia Attitude, taking third.

In Club class, Cinders, owned by Stuart Crow won on both elapsed and corrected time while Al Boone’s, Blue Moon, took second with, Four Winds, owned by John Fenn taking third. Three boats in Club did not complete the race.

Only two out of the five entries in the Multihull class completed the race with, Ceberus, skippered by Mark Pescott placing first and Chimera, with A Mc Phail & Kids onboard placing second.
