Nicholson and Boyd in third at 49er Europeans

Nicholson and Boyd - looking good pre Athens SPA Regatta
Chris Nicholson/Gary Boyd (AUS) are into the Gold fleet at the 49er Championships on Lake Garda in Italy and have lifted up into third overall in some spectacular racing in the 92-strong fleet, which is now split into two groups for final races.

After a day off yesterday, the Gold fleet started early and stayed out late to play race catch up.

Competitors were ready to go at 8.30am, but alas, there was no wind and after a stormy night, they were thrown by the sunny conditions that greeted them. However, patience pays and the wind climbed to a steady 18 knots, perfect for 49er sailing.

This breeze allowed organisers to get five races out of the way and some exceedingly close racing ensued, with a number of incidents and capsizes in the big breeze.

In the shifting conditions, Nicholson and Boyd held their own – a second their best efforts for the day to be currently third placed with 32 points to Chris Sundby/Frode Bovim (NOR) with 24 and Chris Draper/Simon Hiscocks (GBR) on 29.

With a race drop already in place and racing due to finish this Saturday (GMT) it will be interesting to see the outcome.

1 NOR Sundby Christoffer/Bovim Frode 24

2 GBR Draper Chris/Hiscocks Simon 29

3 AUS Nicholson Chris/Boyd Gary 32
