RYA Int'l Regulations for Preventing Collisions - New edition

by RYA on 3 Sep 2015
RYA - RYA International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea RYA
As the second edition of the popular RYA International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (G2) goes to print, the RYA is delighted to announce that the title will now also be available to purchase in eBook format which includes a revolutionary new lights and shapes tool.

Written by Tim Bartlett, one of the country’s leading experts on navigation, the book is essential reading for anyone who takes charge of a vessel either for commercial or recreational use and is particularly useful for students taking courses within the RYA Yachtmaster Scheme.

The new edition has been restructured to provide a clear and authoritative explanation of the collision regulations, in a way that can be logically navigated whether you are using the book as a learning tool, reference or teaching aid.

“Previously the rules were arranged by theme, useful when learning but not as helpful as a reference tool”, explained RYA Publications Manager Steen Ingerslev. “In the new edition, following reader feedback, the title has been restructured to lead users through the regulations by rule order, split into themes (i.e. restricted visibility) with a view to helping them quickly reference the content, making it the perfect book for learning, referencing or teaching the COLREGS.”

The title is also, for the first time, available as an eBook which includes a revolutionary interactive 360° lights and shapes tool allowing readers to gain a more realistic view of how vessels will actually present in a wide variety of contexts. Ideal for learning and teaching it shows all the configurations of lights and shapes, at four different times of day and night.

The illustrations have also been enhanced to help any seafarer understand their responsibilities, meaning that everybody at sea will be safer.

“It’s a rare privilege when you get to work on a project like this - the way we’ve been able to take a big step forward in our publishing by creating an interactive tool for the eBook to improve both understanding and instruction of how vessels present their lights at night. I haven’t seen anything like it before and when I see these kind of results it really spurs me on to continue our digital development in other areas in our pursuit to create the best resources to help those that take to the water in building their confidence through knowledge”, concluded Steen.

The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) are vital for maritime safety as you must be able to identify vessels during the day by their special shapes, and at night time by their lights, as well as understanding both your obligations and those of other vessels as you interact with one another.

The RYA International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (Second Edition) directly supports the RYA Day Skipper, Watch Leader and Coastal Skipper courses.
