Asia Pacific Student Cup 2015 - Day 1 overall

APSC 2015 - Race Day 1 - Asia Pacific Student Cup VKWC
The Asia Pacific Student Cup 2015 commenced yesterday with a day of good racing that saw six flights completed. Thunderstorms cut out a good two-odd hours of race time, but fortunately, when it wasn’t pouring, it was blowing. Wind speeds in the range of 10 to 12 knots prevailed during most of the day which gave us some high intensity match racing action.

The annually held match racing event which is co-organized by Singapore Management University and the Singapore Sailing Federation is an invitational regatta which brings tertiary students together to learn and compete. It is usually sailed in Marina Bay, but received a change of location to Raffles Marina this year. While we will certainly miss the scenic city sailing that the bay provides, there is much to love about the west-facing marina that experiences the building southwest monsoon in full force.

The first of the wind was light though and, coupled with strong current up the course, cost a couple of competitors their races when in Flight 1 Match 1 Daniella Ng hooked the committee boat’s anchor line, and in the first match of the next flight Jervyn Ong dragged the pin-end mark. Fortunately, the wind picked up soon after and really got the boats moving.

Seemingly clear leaders emerge from the first day of racing with Justin Liu (6:0), Sean Lee (4:0) remaining undefeated. If the weather allows though, the regatta is scheduled to complete a double round robin which leaves 14 whole flights to go. With so much racing yet to be done, it is still very much anyone’s game.

Full score:

Clement Lim, SIN, 1-2
Daniella Ng, SIN, 2-4
Jevyn Ong, SIN, 1-2
Justin Liu, SIN, 6-0
Lachlan Gilmour, AUS, 1-3
Sean Lee, SIN, 4-0
Takahiro Ogura, JPN, 0-5
Will Boulden, AUS, 2-1
