2015 EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship - Overall report

by John Friend on 2 Aug 2015
2015 EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship Christian Chardon
Friday saw racing delayed until 16.00 due to light winds. Even then, the wind moved to the north, causing the race committee to abandon the first three races started, relay the course and start again.

Thankfully, being high summer, the evenings are light, so racing could, and did, continue until well past 20.00. This means that despite the late start and fickle conditions, the race schedule is up-to-date, with eight or nine races completed, depending on the class programme.

420

In the boys 420 fleet the largest smile was reserved to Nikolaus Kampelmuhler and Olivier Kobale from Austria, who won two races. Despite this success, Theo Carayon and Erwan Lucas from France retain first position overall with 18 points.

In the 420 girls fleet, Sofie Schone and Line Johanna Thielemann from Germany still lead the event with 17 points, a four point margin over Jenny Cropley and Emma Baker from Great Britain and five points in front of Jessie Kampman and Anael Ponthieu from France.

Laser Radial

Francesca Bergamo from Italy holds the lead in Laser Radial Girls fleet with 24 points, three ahead Louise Cervera (FRA) and four points ahead of Maria Erdi (HUN), who has won the last three races. Unfortunately for her, she is having to include a disqualification in her overall result having been black flagged in one race and disqualified in another. Just four points separate the top four sailors in the Boys Laser Radial fleet, with Jack Cookson from Great Britain holding the lead, ahead of Paolo Giargia (ITA) and another Britain, Daniel Whiteley in third.

29er

After nine races, the 29er Girls fleet is being led by the Polish sailors Aleksandra Melzacka and Maja Micinska who scored a one - six in Friday racing, to take their overall score to 20 points, after discarding an OCS in race seven. They are followed by British pair Anna Prescott and Eve Townsend who are two points adrift of the leaders. Gwendal Nael and Pierre Tygdat (FRA) leads in 29er Boys fleet, with 22 points, a seven point lead over second placed Dan Venables and Patrick Keech (GBR).

RS:X

Two Italians lead in the Boys RS:X fleet, Matteo Evangelisti, who tops the leader board with 14 points, followed by Carlo Ciabatti with 16 points. In the Girls RS:X, Mariam Sekhposyan from Russia continues to do well with two bullets on Friday, and leads Berenice Mege (FRA) by just one point.

SL16

Despite scoring a six – two on Friday, Louis Flament and Charles Dorange (FRA) keep a narrow lead of two points over Matteo Chevrier and Gaspard Cosse (FRA). British sailors Edie Bridle and James King lag some 10 points behind in third place.

Weather conditions are expected to be much like Friday on Saturday, so racing has been rescheduled to start at 15.00. Looking ahead, the forecast for Sunday, when the medal races are to be held, is better, with some 20 knots of wind predicted, as well as sunshine. The medal races will be held close to the shore to make spectating easy.
