Laser Masters’ Worlds - Ideal conditions on first racing day

2015 Laser Masters’ World Championships - Day 1 Luka Bartulovic
First racing day of the 2015 Laser Masters’ World Championships, Kingston provided ideal conditions for the 260 sailors representing 26 nations. Each flight completed two successful races in eight knots of breeze from the South West.

The Apprentice Standard flight was led by Adonis Bougiouris, Greece, in both races. He sits in first after day one, with Matt Blakey, New Zealand, in second, and Great Britain’s Denzil May in third.

In the Standard Master Category, Ari Barshi, Dominican Republic, won both races today, with Australia’s Brett Beyers placing three, two today to sit in second, and Marc Jacobi, United States, is in third.

In the Standard Grand Master Category, Peter Shope, United States, sits in first place, winning both races today. Canadian Andrew Roy is in second, with two seconds today, and Peter Vessella is third with a six, three.



Great Grand Master Alan Keen, South Africa, placed one, two today to finish the day in first, with a five point lead from Canadian John Dawson-Edwards who sits in second. Robert Blakey, New Zealand sits in third, only one point behind Dawson-Edwards.

Radial Apprentice Sailors Zac Skulander, Australia, and Scott Leith, New Zealand, are tied for first place. Skulander won the tie breaker from Leith by finishing first in the final race of the day. Leith sits in second, with Great Britain’s Steven Smith in third.

Great Britain’s Ian Jones currently sits in first in the Radial Masters flight. Keith Davidson, United States, is in second, and is tied with Joao Ramos, Brazil who sits in third, both with six points.

The Radial Grand Masters flight is led by Canadian’s Rob Koci and Robert Britten in first and second respectively. Britten is tied with Australia’s Jeff Loosemore who sits in third, both with seven points.



Radial Great Grand Master Michael Kinnear, Great Britain, placed one, two today to finish first. He was followed by Daniel Devos, France, in second and GBR team mate Kevin Pearson in third.

In the over 75 age category, there are 12 competitors representing 10 nations. Leader of the flight, winning both races today, is Peter Seidenberg, United States. Seidenberg is 76 years old and has been attending the Laser Master Championships since they were launched in 1980. He has won the Laser Masters Worlds eight times. New Zealand’s Michael Shields sits in second, and Johan Van Rossem in third. The Oldest competitor at the event is Japan’s 82 year old Haruyoshi Kimura. Kimura took part in a Laser Masters in Halifax, Canada in 2009 and has been racing in the Masters worlds since 1985. Kimura is also the president of Japan’s Laser Class Association, he currently sits in eighth place.

Tomorrow is another day of Laser Masters’ World Championships Racing on Kingston Waters, with two races scheduled. The first warning signal is 1200 daily, with racing running until July 18 and one lay-day scheduled for July 15.
