If the Volvo Ocean Race organisers wanted a grandstand finish to what has been the closest of racing events in history, then they certainly got it with Saturday’s In-Port Race on the narrow channels of Gothenburg.

It was all set up perfectly. The battle for first in the In-Port Series between Abu Dhabi and Brunel meant that if Brunel won and Abu Dhabi finished last that Brunel would win on a count back. Even more interest surrounded the battle between Alvimedica and Mapfre.

Tied in the overall series it was down to the In-Port series to break the deadlock. Alvimedica had a two-point lead so Mapfre had to put a boat between them to get the win which would be decided on a countback.

A year out from Rio, and the final test event is looming on Guanabara Bay.Some Olympic classes will have their 2015 Worlds before then and some after.

The 2015 Laser World Championship - Kingston, Canada starts this week. The competitor list is filled with 159 of the best Laser Sailors from around the world. These world class athletes will represent 64 different nations. Racing begins on July 2nd and runs daily until July 8th.

The MOD70 trimaran Concise 10 took line honours, finishing at 1040, with an elapsed time of three hours, 30 minutes and 24 seconds. Close behind her were the four GC32 foiling catamarans crossed the line just after 1100, led by Sultanate of Oman and Alinghi, after a close race that saw the boats separated by less than six minutes at the finish.



Mike Slade's 100ft Leopard finished at 1140 to take monohull line honours, but was outside the record time he set two years ago.

2015 Transatlantic Race – An intense low-pressure system rolling up the Atlantic Coast put competitors and race officials on edge for the 48 hours leading up to the first start of the Transatlantic Race 2015, from Newport, R.I., to The Lizard off the southwest coast of England.



Contingency plans were made by both groups, with the option of delaying the start for a few hours getting serious consideration. The storm passed through overnight, however, leaving behind excellent, albeit unseasonably cool, conditions and a favorable boost from the outgoing current and the run-off from Saturday night’s heavy rain.
