Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week - Uncle Bob ‘first' to enter

Larry Leveille’s Schock 35 Uncle Bob was first at the 2015 Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week (LBRW) … first to enter, that is!

The Santa Barbara entrant admitted LBRW is his favorite regatta of the season, saying, 'The racing is great, the race committee work is spot on, and the parties are a lot of fun. We’ve done it 10 or 11 years straight … it’s my favorite regatta.”

Scores of others must agree, as nearly 130 competitors from the US, Canada and Mexico, are slated to race Friday June 26 through Sunday June 28, on one of four courses in the waters off Long Beach, Calif.

Weather conditions are forecast to be ideal, with sunny skies and winds eight – ten knt from the west. Yachts will compete in 16 different divisions over the three-day regatta, spanning from 20-foot Vipers to Bob Lane’s Medicine Man, and also including J/109, J/120, J/70, J/80, Farr 40, Fast 50, PHRF-raters, and a lively multihull class. The Catalina 37 fleet will mark their National Championship at the event.

As for Leveille, he will join a fleet of seven Schock 35s vying for their Pacific Coast Championship title. Was his ‘first to enter’ a portent of success? Leveille said the team has had “a couple of close calls” with second place finishes in the past; for now, he’ll only admit, “We’re happy to just be here – we’ll always do this regatta as long as we can.”

LBRW has been hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club (LBYC) and Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) since 2004, after the Golison family passed the torch on the regatta they initially founded in 1985.

In addition to spirited competition, LBRW is noted for exceptional nightlife. Parties will be held Friday 5-9PM at ABYC; LBYC hosts the Mt Gay Rum Party Saturday 5-9PM and Sunday’s prize-giving, starting with cocktail at 4PM.
