Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos has encouraged members of the community to take the time to thank a volunteer during National Volunteer Week, from today until Sunday, May 17.

The theme of the 26th National Volunteer Week is Give happy. Live happy. More than six million Australian volunteers give happiness to others each year through their volunteering activities and research says that those volunteers are happier as a result.

In a message to more than 3,000 members of Marine Rescue NSW, Commissioner Tannos said this week was a great opportunity for the public to recognise the work of and the vital contribution volunteers made to all sectors of our community.

“When a boater’s in trouble on the water, the sight of one of our Marine Rescue NSW crews heading to their rescue is guaranteed to make them happy,” he said.

“The rest of us can return some of that happiness to you, our members, this week by making sure we take the time to thank you for your work to save lives on the water and your commitment to community service.

“The NSW boating public is much safer on the water thanks to your skill and vigilance.

“On behalf of the Board and staff of Marine Rescue NSW and all the boaters and other members of the community you have helped over the years, I thank each of you for your time and dedication.”

Commissioner Tannos said volunteers were selfless quiet achievers, who truly deserved public acclaim during events such as National Volunteer Week.

Members of the community who are interested in volunteering should get in touch with their local Marine Rescue NSW unit or visit website for more information.
