Volvo Ocean Race - Team Brunel leads the fleet

Team Brunel is leading in the seventh leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. Skipper Bouwe Bekking and his men are 2.5 miles ahead of the number two boat Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. MAPFRE is sailing in third place, 3.6 miles behind Team Brunel.

Last night it was neck and neck at the head of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet.

Three teams occupied the lead position within the space of twelve hours. A true match race was unfolding in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. After first MAPFRE and then Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing had led the race, Team Brunel succeeded in taking the lead position at around 03.30 UTC.

The six Volvo Ocean Race boats are now sailing with a light north-westerly wind around a small low-pressure area, making grateful use of the strong Gulf Stream.

In a few hours’ time, they will encounter a transition zone, after which the wind will slightly increase in force and turn to the south-west.
