Four Toronto youth sailors have been invited to sail at the only North American stopover in the around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race in Newport, Rhode Island on May 9-10, 2015.
At each stopover in this almost year-long race, the host port welcomes sailors, families and fans to various events including the grassroots Volvo Academy--a two-day clinic and Team Racing Event for 32 Optimist Dinghy sailors. Galen Richardson (13), Colston Howell (13), Georgia Phillips (12) and Catherine Savard (14) are local sailors who train out of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. They've been training with their coach since the ice melted in the harbour earlier this month.
This is the first time that a Canadian team has ever participated in the Volvo Academy event and they will be competing against seven other teams representing some of the best youth sailors from the United States.
As one of the most popular sailing dinghies around the world, the Optimist Dinghy is a single-handed boat built for beginner sailors and youth racers up to the age of 15.
The Volvo Ocean Race occurs every three years and lasts approximately nine months. The race is set to finish in June 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
