O Brasil é o país que mais está presente na Volvo Ocean Race, pelo menos na questão geográfica. Somos nação com a maior costa do mundo e isso obriga os barcos a permanecer por aqui por mais tempo. Fazendo um cálculo simples - incluindo a descida do Atlântico na primeira etapa, a parada de 17 dias e a atual perna com destino a Newport - as equipes estão no Brasil por mais de um mês.

'Temos um fator decisivo na Volvo Ocean Race. O Brasil é uma parada estratégica depois da perna dos mares do Sul, a mais desgastante. É onde os consertos mais significativos são feitos e onde muitas quebras ocorrem. Além disso, da região Sul ao Nordeste do país, os barcos encontram uma ótima rota para navegar. Sempre digo que a etapa que sobe o Atlântico é como uma corrida de Fórmula 1, com muitas trocas de posições', disse o brasileiro André 'Bochecha' Fonseca, integrante do MAPFRE, que ocupa provisoriamente a segunda posição na etapa atual. A liderança está nas mãos do Dongfeng Race Team.



A sexta etapa sobe o Atlântico na direção dos Estados Unidos e, nesta segunda-feira (27), os barcos devem se despedir da costa brasileira e entrar nos Doldrums - região hemisférica com ventos inconstantes.

A etapa marca, por enquanto, a volta por cima do Dongfeng Race Team. O barco chinês abandonou a última perna após a quebra do mastro. Com um novinho em folha, os asiáticos estão acelerando - mas todo cuidado é pouco.

'O vento é muito instável por aqui. É difícil para os 'nervos' essa situação, pois nada que você ganha agora pode ser comemorado. A Volvo Ocean Race é realmente interessante. A mudança para um barco one-design alterou tudo e tornou a regata ainda mais difícil. O contato permanente com nossos concorrentes é cansativo e estressante', disse o comandante Charles Caudrelier.



Para chegar em Newport, no estado de Rhode Island, as equipes ainda terão a costa caribenha e o frio da costa leste norte-americana. A previsão para o fim da perna varia entre 6 e 8 de maio.
