The fast and furious ocean contests of 2015 continue off the San Francisco Coast, this time, the Island Yacht Club's
Double Handed Light Ship Regatta, a 25nm jaunt from the Golden Gate Yacht Club out to the SF Entrance Buoy and back
was a quick one, with the first boat, Peter Stoneberg's Prosail 40' Shadow completing the course on a shade over three hours.
Not record territory, but just superb sailing in near perfect conditions. A predicted 3.3 knot ebb at the start accompanied by WSW winds in the mid teens ushered the fleet of 16 double handed boats out the gate, before the fleet encounter NW's in the high teen and mid 20's on the outside. Relatively benign seas with skies painted with just a dash of high cirrus presented conditions primed for a day of glory. And for the Moore 24's, another weekend of offshore glory and tight racing.
It was one, two, three for the Moore's, this weekend, following four out of the top five in the Doublehanded Farallones just two weeks prior. Clicky. This weekend's top dog on corrected time, Pete Trachy and Andrew Hamilton on White Trash , who this weekend corrected out first overall and 5 minutes and change ahead of Peter Schoen's Mooretician and Karl Robrock's Snafu! Here is Pete's take on the race:
'It was a flat out drag race between us a Mooretician out to the lightship. They had the number one up and we had the number three. Peter ate into our initial lead and then passed us to leeward when the breeze lightened up out in the channel. That and a small header put us behind them as we were able to see the first of the big boats rounding the lightship. Fortunately, the wind built and we pulled even with about 200 yards out. We were able to foot down over them in a puff and managed to round ~3 boat lengths ahead. We felt that there was no hope of holding them off with our number three reaching back and that our only hope was to set immediately. Fortunately, it was easy to hold the kite, and from there we just tried to avoid giving them too much leverage. The guiding philosophy of the day was to stay with our fleet while protecting what we thought was the favored part of the course.'
If there was anything tragic about the weekend, it certainly would have to be the low turnout. With such splendid offshore conditions, on can only assume the multitude of conflicts on the sailing calendar, with the Strictly Sail boats show going on, the BYC's Wheeler Regatta, CPYC's intra-club event, the RYC's Big Dinghy among the 15 total events on the YRA calendar, combined with the Easter break many families have taken advantage of these things happen. The OYRA's Full Crewed Lightship is coming up on April 25th, Get On It!
