38th NSW Tasar Championships – Rick Longbottom and Kristi Ruus-Atkinson on Navy Sailing lead the Championships after dominating a tricky race track on day one.

The shifty sou’easterly breeze, which swung at times over 90 degrees set the scene for a challenging three races for the first day of a nine-race series for the 34 competitors. The race organisers from Lake Illawarra did a great job to get all three races away, let alone finished.

Martin Linsley and Russell Ford on Lass were the first to win a heat, followed by Hugh and Anna Tait on Serendipity, with regatta leaders Rick Longbottom and Kristi-Ruus Atkinson rounding out the top three. All three were able to take advantage of an isolated right-hand puff at the start, which left several of the fleet becalmed on the line.

The gun in race two was taken by father and daughter class stalwarts Rob and Nic Douglass who led the race from start to finish. They were notified onshore that they had been OCS along with a few other top contenders, so the official win was presented to Brad Stephens and Jenny Overton, with Anton and Vicki Lynar in second and Glenn and Vanessa Collings, in their return to the class in third.

Rick Longbottom and Kristi Russ-Atkinson continued their consistency in race three, leading around every mark bar the last, when the Douglass’ got on the right side of a Westerly puff to slip into first on the last leg, with Martin Linsley and Russell Ford in third.

After day one, Rick Longbottom and Kristi-Ruus Atkinson on Navy Sailing lead from Hugh and Anna Tait on Serendipity, with the Vivace team of Brad Stephens and Jenny Overton rounding out the podium.

There are three races to be sailed tomorrow and Sunday as part of this nine race series, so it will be all on tomorrow. No doubt once a drop comes into play there will be some interesting action on the scorecard.
