2015 ORC European Sportboat Championship – The pace of entries is increasing approaching the deadline for a discount on the entry fees. After March 31st, the fee will increase from €300 to €500, and already 31 entries from seven countries have signed up to compete at this event, being held over May 19-24th at Balatonfuredi YC on Lake Balaton in Hungary.

The event is open to entries which fit with the ORC Sportboat class rules: overall length between six and nine meters, weight less than 2000 kg in measurement trim, and a displacement/length ratio (DSPM/LSM0^3) less than 4.50.

Typical ORC sportboats include a wide variety of custom and production high-speed designs, including Melges 24's, GP 26's, Elliott 770's, Longtze Premier's, Open 800's and numerous other similar designs. Adrian Konnendijk's new Lutra 25 will be racing at Balaton, and is among a diversity of other well-known designers represented in this fleet: Bruce Farr, Reichel/Pugh, George Elliott, Bob Ames, Jerney Jakopin, Doug Peterson, Andrej Justin, Hungarian Flaar Ltd, to name a few. All boats will need valid ORC Club certificates to be eligible to compete.

Besides competitive designs, the racing will also be held at high levels with sailing talent like Turkish 470 Olympian Sükrü Sanus participating. ORC Sportboat rules, however, specify that at least 50% of the crew members on each entry must be ISAF Group one (amateur) sailors.

Following two days of registration, measurement and practice races, the competition starts on Thursday, May 21st with a coastal race, followed by three days of inshore racing and a prizegiving on Sunday, May 24th.

'We are pleased with the strong interest in our event already,' said Gabor Csernussi of the Balatonfuredi YC. 'and we look forward to more entries in the coming weeks. Our club has a strong history of hosting competitive championship regattas, and Lake Balaton is fantastic venue for racing, so we think this will be an event that no sportboat sailor will want to miss.'
