Volvo Ocean Race - As últimas horas da quinta etapa da Volvo Ocean Race foram bem complicadas e perigosas para os atletas que navegam rumo ao Brasil. Passando pelo Oceano Antártico, as equipes foram obrigadas a fazer manobras e trocas de vela arriscadas na alta velocidade do vento de popa. Os veleiros ficaram literalmente colados na água. Apesar da complexidade dos movimentos, nenhum velejador saiu ferido. O brasileiro Andre 'Bochecha' Fonseca, integrante do MAPFRE, participou das manobras. Clique aqui para ver como é um jibe chinês.

'Quando o mastro ficou quase grudado na água eu sofri o maior susto da minha vida', disse o repórter a bordo do MAPFRE, Fran Vignale. 'Tivemos que reparar velas e perdemos tempo com isso. Mesmo com o susto e as manobras, não perdemos muito tempo e conseguimos nos recuperar'.

O time do Dongfeng foi o primeiro a relatar a realização dessa manobra, chamada de jibe chinês. 'Levou de duas a três horas para resolver a confusão, o barco estava todo de lado', disse Yann Riou, repórter a bordo da equipe vermelha.

O comandante Charles Caudrelier relatou a experiência. 'Curioso experimentar o meu primeiro jibe chinês e um barco chinês. Será uma história que contarei para todas as gerações, mas confesso que a noite passada foi um inferno. Ficamos deitados na água, com 40 nós de vento e 5 metros onda. Isso não é divertido. Estranhamente, no entanto, esta posição é muito calma e tranquila a bordo. Não temos o barulho usual e dá para se comunicar'.

A liderança da etapa cinco - entre Auckland e Itajaí - está nas mãos dos holandeses do Team Brunel. O Abu Dhabi é que está mais próximo deles. Em terceiro está o Team Alvimedica, seguido pelo MAPFRE, Dongfeng e Team SCA.
