Volvo Ocean Race - Una noche salvaje en el Océano Antártico

Cuatro de los seis barcos que componen la flota de la Volvo Ocean Race han sufrido incidentes a su paso por el Océano Antártico en las que han sido, sin duda, las 12 horas más dramáticas de todas la regata.

Team SCA (Sam Davies/GBR), Dongfeng Race Team (Charles Caudrelier/FRA) y MAPFRE (Iker Martínez/ESP) sufrieron varias trasluchadas chinas en la madrugada del lunes al martes. Si bien la fortuna quiso que ningún tripulante resultara herido, lo cierto es que todos los barcos fueron abatidos.



Todavía se siguen evaluando los daños derivados de este tremendo incidente.

El primeros en sufrir una trasluchada china fue el Dongfeng Race Team; de momento parece que habrían conseguido evitar algún que otro problema serio en el barco.

Poco después de la experiencia, fue su reportero a bordo, Yann Riou (FRA), quien daba parte de lo sucedido: “Nos llevó dos o tres horas poner orden al caos que teníamos a bordo; el barco estaba totalmente tumbado hacia un lado'.



MAPFRE (Iker Martínez/ESP) fue otro de los barcos que vivió la dureza del Océano Antártico en plena noche, de hecho notificó varias trasluchadas chinas que –según informaron- podrían haberse dado alrededor de las 20.00 UTC. Tras el incidente, la embarcación española no notificó daños a bordo.



Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (Ian Walker / GBR) vivió igualmente una noche dramática que fue descrita como “una noche de dos viradas: una salvaje en un escenario totalmente negro y con un impacto tremendo y otra controlada a unos 30 nudos de velocidad”.



El TEAM SCA quedó volcado de forma similar alrededor de las 05.00 UTC. La reportera a bordo del equipo femenino, Anna-Lena Elled explicaba:

“Estuvimos totalmente volcadas hacia un lado durante unos dos o tres minutos antes de volver, muy lentamente, a la posición correcta”, comentaba la tripulante al Race HQ.

“La tripulación se centró en analizar los daños y actualmente se encuentra efectuando algunas reparaciones”, matizaba.



Los cuatro barcos pueden seguir navegando

El barco emiratí sigue manteniendo una distancia de unas 8 millas náuticas respecto al líder Team Brunel (Bouwe Bekking/NED), con MAPFRE en tercer lugar y a unas 26 millas más atrás. El Team SCA ha perdido 38 millas en estas últimas horas y se encuentra a 97.7 millas náuticas por detrás de los líderes.
