Volvo Ocean Race - Jimmy Nelson portrays the tribe Team Brunel

by Team Brunel - Robbert-Jan Metselaar on 12 Mar 2015
Team Brunel - Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 Team Brunel
Volvo Ocean Race - The renowned British photographer Jimmy Nelson is going to take portraits of the Team Brunel sailors in Auckland. Nelson became world famous for his book Before They Pass Away, for which he visited 44 countries in three years, photographing indigenous people.

Jimmy Nelson regards Team Brunel as a tribe that has to work together in order to survive, much like the 35 tribes featured in his book Before They Pass Away. Nelson will focus on life on board and the daily routine on shore. He will show the teamwork, the action and the adrenaline on board Team Brunel during the in-port race and the start of the leg.

He will also portray the emotions of the sailors as they say goodbye to loved ones and friends. His series of photos will provide a unique picture of the sailors as they prepare for the hardest leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. There will be an exhibition of photographs from this unique photo-shoot later this year. There are no further details about this exhibition as yet.

About Jimmy Nelson

Jimmy Nelson’s father worked as a geologist for an international oil company, which meant that he spent his youth in Africa, Asia and South America. After ten years at a boarding school in the north of England, he decided to cross Tibet on foot. Following a one-year journey, his visual diary showing photos of a hitherto unknown Tibet was published. It was a publication that brought Nelson international acclaim. Shortly afterwards, as a photojournalist, he was commissioned to cover a variety of themes, ranging from the Russian involvement in Afghanistan and the on-going strife between India and Pakistan in Kashmir to the beginning of the war in former Yugoslavia.

In 1997, Jimmy started work on successful commercial advertising assignments for major A brands. In the same period, he also started to photograph remote and unique cultures, using a traditional, 50-year-old large-format camera. The photos garnered him many prizes and the results can be seen in the book Before They Pass Away. More information about Jimmy Nelson:
