On 28 February Greenwich Yacht Club was presented with a brand new safety boat and outboard engine at the Show held at Alexandra Palace.
To publicise their event sponsorship, Suzuki ran a competition to win a Rigiflex Newmatic 360 safety boat powered by a Suzuki DF9.9A engine. Members of sailing and boating clubs were able to enter in order to win the prize on behalf of their club.
Along with a towing trailer and accessories, the total boat package is worth around £5,300.
In January, as the competition neared its closing date, as many members of Greenwich Yacht Club as possible were encouraged to enter. Out of over 4,500 competition entries the winner was Les McKee, the captain of GYC's motorboat section.
Commodore of Greenwich Yacht Club, Steve Wilson said: 'We will be putting the prize to good use at the club, supporting club activities, training, laying marker buoys and providing safety cover for our dinghy races, and so on. Being on the tidal Thames, conditions can be challenging so having this sturdy and reliable boat package will come in very handy.'
GYC's regular dinghy races take place every month of the year on the River Thames, usually between the Thames Barrier and the cable car by the O2 Arena. And there are plans to expand the club's programme as an RYA Training Centre.
Anyone who wants to join the club is welcome to first go along to a Tuesday evening Club Night. GYC is at the end of Peartree Way, London SE10. The club provides dinghy sailing, yachting, and there is a motorboat and a rowing section. Everyone from beginners to experts is welcome.
