Lifeskills National Careers Week - RYA to showcase marine careers

by Emma Slater on 27 Feb 2015
Lifeskills National Careers Week - Launch Emma Slater / RYA http://www.rya.org.uk
To coincide with Lifeskills National Careers Week, being held from 2nd to 6th March, throughout the week the RYA will be showcasing just some of the great jobs available within the marine sector and running daily features about courses, diplomas and routes to becoming an instructor in various boating disciplines.

The recreational boating industry has grown tremendously, creating a wide range of opportunities for those of want to work on the water, whether it’s as a dinghy instructor, sail maker or lock keeper.

During the week on the RYA website and RYA Facebook page there will be daily features focusing on getting yourself trained for your dream job. We kick off the week chatting with students and teachers at the London Nautical School about the Level 3 BTEC Sailing and Watersports course. Then throughout the week we hear about the UKSA’s Watersports Instructor Training diploma and find out what it takes to become a, windsurf, inland or powerboat instructor.

Alongside the daily features we will also chatting to a whole host of people working in the marine industry in our ‘Day in Life’ profiles. Each day we will be posting two different jobs including; marine journalist and marine photographer, professional sailor, dinghy instructor, marine environmentalist, rigger and many more. The list is by no means exhaustive as there so many amazing jobs within the marine industry but it will give you a taste of what’s out there.

'National Careers week provides us with a fantastic opportunity to shout about the diversity of the maritime industry, the amazing jobs and unique careers within it.

'With such a variety of training available from vocational courses such as the BTEC, to RYA Training Course, gaining the knowledge and experience required has never been so accessible. Having been in the Watersports industry for over 17 years, I believe the industry has truly exceptional and diverse opportunities for young people', commented RYA Chief Instructor, Dinghy and Windsurfing, Amanda Van Santen.

We will also be giving away free copies of the RYA Working on Water book providing everything you need to know about working in the vast Watersports industry, whether you’re looking for a gap-year pastime or a new career. All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is tweet us @rya #dreammarinejob and tell us what would be your ideal marine job and we will pick a daily winner to claim a copy of the book.
