Volvo Ocean Race – The race tightens as New Zealand looms

by Volvo Ocean Race on 26 Feb 2015
MAPFRE - Sailing south towards New Zealand - Leg 4 to Auckland - Volvo Ocean Race 2015 Francisco Vignale/Mapfre/Volvo Ocean Race
Volvo Ocean Race 2015 – Dongfeng has pulled another mile from Abu Dhabi, and MAPFRE looks like they have been making some good gains on the two leading boats.

The stance on most of the boats is that the approach to New Zealand will compress the fleet as they hit the lighter wind pressure system, which looms over the land.

As we said yesterday, the angle of attack into the lighter winds could be a big tactical decision. However at the moment tactics are just to sail faster than everyone else and that’s all they can do.

All the teams must have done a lot of research on the local conditions along the coast from the north of the island. Cove after cove, there will be local wind and tide to use to their potential advantage.

The Auckland local on Team Alvimedica, Dave Swete, could have some tricks up his sleeve and he’s going to need them if he wants to make it to the cricket match – he’s got tickets! At the moment he thinks they will arrive just at the end of the match on Saturday, February 28.
