Boaters urged to postpone boating until conditions subside

by Transport Roads and Maritime Services on 20 Feb 2015 Roads and Maritime Services is urging boaters in northern NSW to take extra care and consider whether it is necessary to go boating during heavy rain and blustery conditions resulting from Cyclone Marcia.

Director NSW Maritime Angus Mitchell said dangerous conditions and possible flooding were predicted for the Northern Rivers area including the Tweed, Bunswick, Richmond, Wilsons, Clarence Bellinger and Nambucca Valleys.

'Submerged and floating debris combined with dangerous currents and the possibility of flood surges means dangerous conditions for recreational boating,' Mr Mitchell said.

'Skippers should check the weather forecasts and consider whether it is necessary to go boating today and into the weekend until these dangerous conditions subside.

'Crossing a coastal bar, heading offshore or rock fishing should be avoided.

'Navigation markers to guide skippers around hazards may be washed or blown out of place. People wishing to report a missing navigation marker should call 13 12 56.

'Strong winds can cause dangerous conditions for vessels on moorings. Boat owners are responsible for ensuring their vessel is secure but should only venture out to check their moorings are intact and in good working order if the weather conditions allow it.'

Mr Mitchell said if boating is unavoidable, skippers should be on high alert and regularly monitor weather conditions and emergency warnings.

'And remember, a lifejacket will only save your life if you wear it,' he said.
