Kite Controller gives wings to kayaks and canoes

by Dan Tracy on 19 Feb 2015
Kite Controller Dan Tracy
Pacific Sky Power is launching the Kite Controller, a redesigned reel-bar with a compression winch that maintains equal line lengths throughout the launch and retrieval. For kayaks and canoes, this system enables sailing with a kite.

The Kite Controller should be used with one-to-three square meter, two line traction kites. For launch, hold the kite, so it fills with wind and then start reeling out. Once the kite is fully deployed, you can steer by pivoting the control bar. When it's time to head in, reel-in and paddle to shore.

The system can also be used for self-rescue towing. Rescue kites are now required for some offshore racing. This gives boats backup propulsion if sail or engine power is lost.

Sailing with a kite is a new option for boaters looking for a free ride from the wind. Planning to be out on the water all day? Bring along the Kite Controller. When the wind fills in, clip on the waist harness and you’re ready to fly. If you need a break, just reel-in and launch again when you’re ready.

Depending on your skill level, this system can be used in 5 to 35 knot winds. 5 to 15 knots wind and training on land is recommended for beginners. The kite can be maneuvered for tacking across the wind and actively swooping the kite produces maximum power.
