CSSN Website Improvements

CSSN received valuable user feedback on the 2013 User Survey and in 2014 we made significant changes.

Realizing that our best communication channels with cruisers were via the internet and email, we embraced current technology and updated/improved the visual look and feel of the website as well as adding new up to date functionality.

CSSN Improved its NEWS feature to show the top five News items displayed on the CSSN home page. The home page shows he top five, and then one click takes the user to the Top 20 News Items; and then, with a quick scroll down the page, all archived news reports are headlined.

CSSN Introduced an easy to use online reporting form. It has enabled us to get accurate information in a standardized format. That way we are able to be sure each report is as complete as possible and that our database of reports of crime against yachts in the Caribbean is as accurate as possible. Moreover, this system allows us to report on a near real-time basis – something we have wanted to do for a long time.

The Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN) recently introduced Email Alerts, ending the year with more than 250 subscribers who are the first to know when a new incident or news item is posted to the CSSN website. We offered subscribers Instant Alerts, Daily, Weekly and Monthly Summaries deliver directly to you Email inBox. If you have not already subscribed, you can easily do it when you visit the website. (and of course it’s free).

Hotspots is a new feature added to show which countries had the most reports, next most and so on. It is a powerful tool for visualizing the relative number of crime reports in the Caribbean. For visualization the Hotspot Heat Map is easy to read. Additionally, there is a special spreadsheet analysis capability, Index Card summaries of incidents, and Graphical presentation of types of events. Any user can filter the data and create their own special reports. This is especially useful to law enforcement, other Cruiser Group Websites and Social Media that want analytical data from our database. And it is all free. Click Here to see the 2014 HOTspot Map.

CSSN added the ability to share any page, post or news item using your favorite social media. Each and every page of the CSSN website allows your to share the information with anyone via your social media accounts in Facebook, Twitter, and all others. Plus, you can subscribe to RSS feeds with just a few clicks on the RSS icon on each page. Now all your cruiser friends can 'Know Before You Go'.

Finally, we added incident location graphics from Google Maps for each post of an incident report. Not only did it improve location visualization, it allowed us to automatically geocode each incident location as it was reported. In future, as we collect more geocoded incidents, we hope to improve the value of our website and database even more.

So, there are the highlights for 2014. The all volunteer staff at CSSN thanks you for your support, particularly the timely reporting of incidents. With that level of support, all cruisers in the Caribbean can 'Know Before You Go'.
