Medals in Miami - 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup

by Sail Canada on 31 Jan 2015 The final showdown was set to take place on Bravo course today with all three Paralympic fleets jousting for medals. Sailors waited for wind anxiously onshore and on course until racing was officially called off at 1530. Canadian Allan Leibel sailed a very consistent event taking home the Bronze medal in the 2.4mR fleet. Megan Pascoe maintains silver and the dominant Bjørnar Erikstad secures the gold.

Canadian Sonar Team secured their first medal of 2015 today. Tingley, Campbell & Lutes will add a bronze to their collection alongside their silver medal from the IFDS World Championships. The trio are pleased to stand on the podium once again however have loftier goals in their near future. 'We know we can improve immensely on our performance and made some errors on the course this week. We are keen to get back to more training.'

The Laser & Radial Gold fleet launched for a 10am start today and managed to squeeze in one decent race before the wind faded. Isabella Bertold put the charge on with another solid fifth place finish, enough to move her into 16th, 3 points behind Canadian Brenda Bowskill. Unfortunately the charge was a little too late with racing called off for the day, Brenda Bowskill clinches the spot for Toronto 2015. 'I am happy for Brenda,' says Bertold. 'She sailed very well earlier this week and earned her spot.' Bowskill is the third Canadian sailor to qualify for the Pan American Games. Zac Plavsic & Nikola Girke qualified in the RSX two weeks ago at the Miami midwinters. 'My week was very up and down, and nail biting to say the least,' reflects Brenda. 'However, I am happy with my overall progress. I am super stoked to have qualified for Pan Am Games. It will be an amazing experience, especially in my home city!'

Nacra team Luke & Nikola round out their event with a 3 in Race 13. While the duo share their disappointment with their overall event finish of 17th, they were successful in locking up three top 5 results this week.

Tomorrow is the final day of the ISAF World Cup Miami with top ten medal racing for the Olympic Classes followed by a medal ceremony for the Olympic and Paralympic podium performers.
