BAR in Bermuda, First AC45 in Italy, World Cup Miami, Barcelona..more

by Dan Ibsen, Sail-World UK Editor on 30 Jan 2015 Ben Ainslie Racing, the British Challenger for the 35th America's Cup, have shipped two foiling Nacra 20 catamarans to Bermuda and have become the first team to commence sailing operations at the Venue for the next Cup.

The team conducted an initial training camp in Bermuda, last week.

'It's been great for the team to get out on the water, trying to learn about the venue, the wind direction, the wave states in our 20 foot foiling training boats,' commented Team Principal and Skipper, Ben Ainslie. 'A huge amount has been learnt, and we can now go back to our design team and start working on developing the final race boat for 2017.'

Italy and the city of Cagliari, Sardinia - Italy, will inaugurate the 2015 – 2016 America's Cup World Series, the regattas preliminary to the 35th America's Cup.

The 'America's Cup World Series - Cagliari - Sardinia' will take place in the Gulf surrounding the island's capital from June 4 to 7, 2015 All six teams entered in the 35th America's Cup - Oracle Team USA, Artemis Racing, Ben Ainslie Racing, Emirates Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa Challenge and Team France - will be present.

The racing will be even more spectacular since the AC45 one-design catamarans with 20 metre wing-sails have been modified to sail in 'full-foiling' configuration, i.e. they will 'fly' on water.

Shifts upon shifts upon shifts upon shifts – this has been the experience of the sailors this year at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami. There's a world of difference between skiing a long, smooth run and skiing on moguls. Forget the waves, it was the breeze on Biscayne Bay that was 'moguls.'

During the week 599 boats and 768 sailors from 63 nations have competed in Miami at the world cup, and it is the largest fleet ever in Miami. Friday is the last days for the qualification series and Saturday there will Medal Races in all classes.

It is also the last time with no limitations on the entries for a ISAF Sailing World Cup. Next two World Cup’s in Europe in Hyeres and Weymouth, there are limitations in all classes at max 40 boats. Some sailors need to qualify via qualification events in Palma and Medemblik.

So in the future we will only see the top level sailors at the ISAF Sailing World Cup events, which will hopefully strengthen the continental events.

In Europe this will be the five EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup events for Olympic Classes: Princesa Sofia Cup (Mallorca), Garda Trentino Olympic Week, Delta Lloyd Regatta (Medemblik), Kielerwoche and Semaine Olympique Francaise (La Rochelle), where Palma and Medemblik as mentioned are World Cup Qualifiers.

2014 - 2015 Barcelona World Race – with half the fleet now in the South Indian Ocean there is no escape further south because of the Antarctic Exclusion Zone.

Already at this quite early time in the race there is 2000-3000 miles from the leader to the last three boats, and due to the Antartic Exclusion Zone there is for many miles limited tactical possibilities, so all it counts for is speed.

The world’s elite sailors are preparing to meet in Singapore for the opening Act of the 2015 Extreme Sailing Series, which is set to bring the world famous Marina Bay alive with its pioneering Stadium Racing concept.

With the transfer window now closed, some new players will enter the arena as the Series launches into its ninth season. Unfortunately this year series will miss the 2014 winner, Alinghy plus Ben Ainslie Racing and Emirates Team New Zealand, who both have chosen to concentrate all efforts on the Americas Cup project, including the start of the AC45 World Series.

Nine teams with 45 world-class sailors from 10 nations will lock horns from the 5 to the 8 of February, under the gaze of the towering downtown city skyline in Singapore.
