Goolwa Regatta Week at the Marina Hindmarsh Island has several new events and these are already attracting the interest of sailors and spectators. Goolwa Regatta Week will commence on Saturday 17 January 2015 and will conclude with the iconic Milang-Goolwa Freshwater Classic on Sunday 25 January.
The Marina Hindmarsh Island will be the venue for Optimist Dinghy racing in The Marina Central on Saturday 17th. This will be organised by the Goolwa Aquatic Club, and will add to the Marina Challenge happening on the same day nearby, in the southern lagoons. Both events will be challenging for the sailors and great viewing for spectators in the confines of The Marina Hindmarsh Island waterways.
A Gala Expo Day has been included on Sunday 18 January at the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club (GRYC), a great event for the whole family, with 'Come and Try' remote controlled yachts and Sailability yachts, a Royal Flying Doctor flight simulator, a vintage boat race, a marine swap meet, jumping castle and face painting, lots of local food and wine, live music, art and heaps of fun!
Businesses will be competing in a different way on Wednesday 21 January. Corporate teams will be hosted by GRYC skippers in a Corporate Challenge yacht race series that will require good team work on-board to achieve success.
Entrants in The Marina Hindmarsh Island 2015 Milang Goolwa Freshwater Classic will have a tune-up race this year, at GRYC on Thursday 22 January. This Maughan Thiem tune up is for all yachts that do not qualify for the Doser Freight Dash for Cash the following day, and will ensure that all Freshwater Classic entrants have a chance to fine-tune their boats and crew ready for the big event on Sunday 25 January.
Thousands of spectators are expected to watch these and all the other events around Goolwa during the week, and they will certainly be watching the Milang to Goolwa race from on-shore and on-water, along the route downstream of Milang, around Point Sturt, past Clayton cliffs and on to Goolwa.
'The River Murray and lower lakes provide unique opportunities for spectators to get up close to yachts racing in all the events during Goolwa Regatta Week', said Locky McLaren, Commodore of the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club.
'We are excited about the interest being shown in all the events. There is a lot of information available on the website event website, so people can enter events and plan their stay in Goolwa and the surrounding areas during this festival time'.
