Go on undersea adventure in theatre show at National Maritime Museum

Captain Nemo’s Nautilus Jude Timms
This summer the Australian National Maritime Museum invites families to enjoy a brand new theatre show, Captain Nemo’s Nautilus, inspired by its new children’s adventureland, Voyage to the Deep.

Specially written and produced by the acclaimed Monday Baa Theatre Company the show features a cast of quirky and captivating characters inspired by Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues under the Seas who take families on a thrilling undersea adventure.

When Peta accidentally travels back in time to the extraordinary submarine world of Captain Nemo’s Nautilus there are curious and wonderful adventures ahead: deep sea diving for oceanic treasures, fighting off ten-tentacled aquatic beasts and even surveying the stomach churning menu of un-sustainable seafood delicacies on board — Sea Turtle Steak anyone?

Children and adults alike will laugh, dance and have lots of fun while learning about all sorts of undersea creatures and the importance of conserving our beautiful and precious oceans.

Captain Nemo’s Nautilus is presented in association with the museum’s new exhibition Voyage to the Deep: Underwater Adventures in which children are invited to release their inner aquanaut and explore the mysteries of the deep.

At the centre of this fantasy world is the giant Nautilus where kids can climb aboard and discover the inner workings of a deep-sea submersible…they can take up the controls at the helm, peer through the periscopes, crank the propeller, test out the bunks and explore Captain Nemo’s Cabinet of Curiosities full of wonderful marine specimens. There’s even a bubbly pipe organ to play and a galley full of strange foods to discover!

And throughout the school holidays, there’s plenty of other associated activities to keep families entertained when visiting museum. Don’t miss the kids’ craft and dress-up sessions, torchlight tour, ghost net weaving workshops, tours for the under 5s and film making and photography workshops.

Captain Nemo’s Nautilus runs daily Sunday to Friday at 11.30 am and 2 pm until 25 January. Entry to the theatre show, Voyage to the Deep, other school holiday activities and museum vessels are included in the Big Ticket $27 adults, $16 child/concession or $70 families (two adults + three children). For full details on all summer holidays activities, please click here or call 02 9298 3777.
