2014 -15 Zhik Australian 9er Championships - Based at Jervoise Bay, Western Australia, the 2014-15 Australian 9er Championships conducted five days of Olympic class sail racing. Southport Yacht Club were represented by Joel Tuner and Lewis Brake, competing in the 49er class. With five days of strong competitive racing, the crew of Why Seas won 10 of the 15 races finishing the championships on top in first place (first).
Another great achievement from Southport Yacht Club sailors were Kyle O’Connell and crew Tom Siganto, sailing in the 29er class to also finish on the podium in third place (third). This sets Kyle and Tom up well for their National Youth Championships, which starts this week at Fremantle Sailing Club, Western Australia.
The 29er class, had the largest fleet sailing, with the SYC sailors competing against 43 other competitors, and the 49ers against 11 others.
Southport Yacht Club currently have their biggest fleet of five sailors competing in the Optimist Youth Nationals; Ashleigh Swadling, Charlie Piacun, Riley Cameron, Blake Wilson and Tom Wright, as well as Max Quan sailing in the Laser 4.7 Division, fresh off his 18th Place in the Open Laser National Championships last week in Mandurah, Western Australia (first Queenslander).
Another win for Southport Yacht Club Junior sailors, saw Angus Sherring and Jackson Foort, win the Sabot 2-Up at the National Sabot Championships, held at Townsville Sailing Club, concluding yesterday, Sunday 4th January, 2015.
