Rumble in the Reach - About to begin

The 'Reach' or Blackwall Reach is a narrowing of the Swan River, a gorge if you like. The reach is 1.2 km long and .33 km wide. It is affectionately known as the 'Drainpipe' The prevailing southwesterly wind funnels down the reach. It is notoriously difficult to sail with currents and a swirling wind.

Each year, East Fremantle Yacht Club, which is at the head of the reach, holds the Rumble in the Reach. In the morning the juniors hold their races in the O’pen Bic class and in the afternoon The Rumble is open to all sports boats. It is a handicap start with boats off at 30 sec intervals. There are three races and if you place in a race, you are further handicapped for the subsequent race.

The course is a normal windward and then a downwind slalom around four marks, 600 metres from top mark to bottom. The midway point of the course is set 100 metres in front of the East Fremantle Yacht Club balcony.

Being the only racing for the day, the club’s upstairs verandah bar that is packed full of well primed spectators. There is a commentator on hand to entertain and explain the event to the spectators.

With good sea breezes this year, hopefully we will replicate the first Rumble which had perfect conditions – 20 knots and have some thrills and spills to entertain the crowd. East Fremantle opens its doors to the General Public so they can enjoy all the thrills and spills of the close quarter racing.
