Fleet Racing - City of Canberra Regatta Matt Owen
2014 City of Canberra Regatta - Australia’s best sport boats and trailable sailors will converge on Lake Burley Griffin over the first week in December for the annual City of Canberra Regatta. Most years there has been excellent winds and great racing for the mixed fleet of boats traveling from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

This year The VX-One association will be holding their 2014 VX-One ACT Championships in conjunction with the regatta with over nine boats booked to come. The fleet will include the top place sailors at the Nationals and Mid-Winter Titles. Andrew York (Yorky), 2014 VX-One National title holder but most famously known for sailing his VX from Sydney Harbour to Pittwater in 25 knots and 3.0m swells.

This feat has made him a celebrity on YouTube with 21,000 hits and counting. The fleet will be out to promote that class to other sailors.

The local and interstate Elliott 7 fleet will have some great racing with the local Magic 25 fleet as normal. In Division Two local hero Peter Taylor in his Adams 21 will do battle again with a very strong fleet of boats including Greg and Ronda Brown of Nowra in their Timpenny.

Sailed on Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin, three races are conducted on the Saturday (12.30pm) including an early evening race (5.30pm), and a longer passage race on Sunday morning, which makes this an unique event.

CYC CEO Matt Owen said, explains that each year this regatta has been held, we have seen very competitive racing, we will have more than 35 boats and excellent close fleet racing between the local and visiting yachts.

The NoR and on-line entry is available here.
