Victorian Cat Championships - All or nothing

by Jane Moffat on 24 Nov 2014
Glenn Ashby practising for the Moth Worlds - 2014 Victorian Catamaran Championships Rhenny Cunningham
The 2014 Victorian Catamaran Championships at McCrae Yacht Club dished up all sorts of weather, an all or nothing situation. Maybe Simon Merritt jinxed it when at the briefing he said, 'the current weather is the best we’ve had for the start of this regatta'.

Saturday delivered light winds with just one race completed, Sunday by contrast was a blustery day creating challenging conditions for the fleet, multiple capsizes adding to the spectators viewing pleasure.

The championships have been held at McCrae for a number of years and as the home yacht club of Glenn Ashby it attracts a good crowd of a sailors and spectators. Ashby decided to give the mere mortals a chance and took to the water in a Moth for some foiling practice.

Matthew Stone from Somers Yacht Club was first in the Mosquito with three bullets from four races. It was similar story across most of the other fleets with those finishing first convincingly taking the top spot. The 11 Taipan sailors had a close fought regatta with Leigh Hein and Andrew Vize battling for top spot, Hein being victorious. There were just two points separating the next four place getters, with Michael Broise and Richard Nicholson finishing on equal points.

If a picture tells a thousand words Rhenny Cunningham from Sailing Shots captured the weekend, from Hobie 16’s on Port Phillip which looked like a mirror to numerous capsizes and spray everywhere. Next year Simon Merritt won’t be allowed to comment on the weather at the briefing!!
