Route du Rhum…VOR… Int. Sailing Summit… ISAF decisions

by Dan Ibsen and the Sail-World Team on 14 Nov 2014
SW
Welcome to Sail-World.com’s UK e-magazine for November 14th, 2014.

Route du Rhum 2014 has proven to be one for the record books, with epic carnage at the race's start, followed by Loick Peyron's record-breaking singlehanded run to win the race while also establishing a new benchmark pace for this 3,542-mile course that took the fleet from Saint-Malo, France to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

Peyron sailed a total of 4,199 nautical miles at a pace of 22.93 knots aboard the maxi trimaran 'Banque Populaire VII', to set a new elapsed time record of seven days, 15 hours, eight minutes and 32 seconds.

Impressively, Peyron only stepped in to pinch-hit for skipper Armel Le Cléac'h, who injured his hand, some two months ago. Moreover, Peyron also managed to beat skipper Yann Guichard, who was racing aboard the world’s biggest trimaran, 'Spindrift 2'.

Speaking of offshore adventures, the entire fleet that's competing in this year's Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) arrived safely in Cape Town, South Africa, after beating a fast path to the tip of Africa from Alicante, Spain.

As we reported last week, skipper Ian Walker and his 'Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing' team took top honours followed by 'Dongfeng Race Team' and 'Team Brunel'.

Latest VOR news is that British offshore veteran Rob Greenhalgh has been announced as the on board replacement for Michel Desjoyeaux aboard Mapfre for the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. Greenhalgh is a three time Volvo Ocean race competitor, sailing the last edition aboard Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Rob’s younger sister Libby Greenhalgh is on Team SCA, and was ‘stoked’ and ‘excited’ to hear the news. Read the story here

The 2014 ISAF Annual Conference closed in Palma de Mallorca, Spain the previous weekend. The conference took place from 1-8 November 2014 with more than 500 delegates from over 70 nations. Sailors gathered in Palma to discuss debate and decide on the decisions that will take the sport forward into 2015 and beyond.

Some important issues and decisions are:

• The final day format for the 49er and the 49erFX will be the same as the other classes: one double points Medal Race without boundaries and a target time of 20 minutes; Council voted against the wish of the Olympic Classes and Athletes Commission on this hotly debated issue.

• All supplied equipment at the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition should be distributed after a public draw, ensuring transparency.

• The International Association for Disabled Sailing’s (IFDS) merger with ISAF was completed with the creation of an ISAF Disabled Sailing Committee.

• ISAF Executive Committee withdrew their submission about deleting the ISAF Classification Code from the ISAF Regulations.

• ISAF Youth Worlds will from 2017 and onwards have both Boys and Girls Skiff – mirroring the Olympics; Further there is a recommendation for a new Multihull Mix discipline to be the new Nacra 15, as soon as possible
• ISAF has decided to support the ideas of a closer relation and cooperation between ISAF and Continental Federations; A new working party will be working on a final proposal.
