October marks the time of year where Canadians celebrate good harvest and fortune followed by the ever so popular Halloween, the single night of the year when candy hoarding and unusual attire are encouraged. Amidst all the seasonal traditions included some outstanding showcases by our Canadian sailors.

Olympic silver medalist Mike Wolfs continues to draw attention to his ever-growing resume of sailing success including the latest achievement of first place at the J80 World Championships in Annapolis. The Star medallist crewed on 'Savasana' with helm Brian Keane, Stu McNay and Ron Weed edging out the competitive 30-boat fleet.

Theodora Horangic (RNSYS) travelled to Hamilton Bermuda to compete at the Optimist Junior Gold Cup, placing 21st overall while a fleet of young sailors competed at the Optimist World Championships in Argentina including Nova Scotian's David Sapp, Ryan Anderson, Ben Ruitenberg and Toronto's Mike Magi.

Radial youth sailor Graham Harney (RVYC) rounded out a successful sailing season winning the overall Grand Prix series standings and securing a berth for the Radial Youth Worlds.

The Laser Masters World Championships were hosted in Hyères, France with 500 entrants in four different age divisions. The Canadian contingent took the event by storm with top ten performances in each highly competitive division including 2013 Sailor of the Year finalist Al Clark placing seventh (116 boats) in the Standard Masters division, Ray Davies sixth in Standard Apprentice (38 boats), and John Dawson-Edwards third in Standard Great Grand Masters division. Peterborough native and North American Laser class President Andy Roy sailed neck and neck with Nick Harrison (GBR) coming down to the final nail biting race of the event where Andy captured the silver medal and Harrison the gold. 'He actually thought I had won when we crossed the finish line, but I knew I was a point short,' said Roy. 'Finishing second really gives me the motivation for 2015 Worlds, held conveniently in my backyard of Kingston.' The stage is set for another epic Laser battle amongst the best in the world next July!

Sail Canada congratulates all Canadian sailors on their accomplishments this month and proudly tip our hats to Andy Roy with the honor of Sailor of the Month for Sail Canada
