29er Eurocup - Success all round at Riva del Garda + Video

by Elena Giolai on 3 Nov 2014
2014 29er Eurocup Elena Giolai/Fraglia Vela Riva
The 29er Eurocup came to a close today at Riva del Garda after the maximum 14 out of 14 scheduled races were completed. Paul Farien- Mirco Kloesel of Germany took first place, while Janezic- Podlogar of Slovenia, second, won the Tour after seven legs. Among the women the Brits came out top after a wonderful performance by El-Khazindar-Loveridge. Satisfaction also at Fraglia Vela Riva for closing the season with a juvenile event that is growing in popularity and technical skill, all defined by glorious weather.

The last event of the 2014 season organised by Fraglia Vela Riva could not have ended in a better way. The 29er Eurocup, which closed the European Circuit, took place over four glorious days of sunshine and exceptional wind conditions, especially in the morning when the northerly winds reached 22-24 knots. With 14 races completed out of 14 scheduled, it was a full programme for this international event which saw at least half of the races held with strong northerly winds, which proved very challenging for a good number of the 84 crews from 12 different countries.

This morning (which started racing at 8.30), Germans Farien-Kloesel were able to dominate their closest rivals Janezic-Podlogar, to hold on to their lead. In fact in the last three races the Germans achieved an 11-7-7 compared to a 16-8-6 from the Slovenians who had to make do with second place. They have, however comfortably won the European 29er Circuit after this, the seventh and final leg. The Danish crew of Nyburg-Olsen gave an excellent performance. Perhaps if they had done better on the first day, they might have posed a bigger threat to the top two. This morning they scored a 3-2-10. Norwegians Tomas and Mads Mathisen won regatta 14 and Germans (Ger 2109), Wolter Martin let loose today with a 2-1 and a false start bfd. In the women's, Wunderle-Loveridge of Great Britain won with a 20-9-9 today and with that result they took fifteenth place overall beating Germans Stuhlemmer-Schuchmann, (21st overall). The Italians came outside the top thirty.
